I know that you
state that this contest is only open to
Goldens, but to me he was Golden.
Murphy Tailwagger had a Heart of Gold, a
heart filled with love. He was a gentle,
loving dog. And yesterday we had to put my
14-year-old Golden-hearted dog to
sleep. I'm heartbroken. But I know that
someday, when I cross that Rainbow Bridge
myself, he'll be waiting to greet me,
waiting to accompany me on my next journey,
ever my faithful and loving canine
companion.
Murphy Tailwagger suffered from Canine
Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome. It's sort of
Doggie Alzheimer's Disease. A dreadful
disease that robs the dog's memories. We
never heard about this disease until
recently. We didn't realize that our dog's
failure to recognize us—wag
his tail at us when we returned home or his
incontinence were early signs of this
disease. The one vet we visited didn't see
it either, he chalked up the dog's problems
to his getting old. Anyway, things got worse
over the past year. Murphy became very
confused. When he saw the first snowfall, he
didn't know what to do. It was heartbreaking
to see him this way. When we found out what
he had, we tried the medicine for it—Anipril.
But it did not work. We tried one additional
medicine, but Murphy kept getting more and
more confused at home. He paced back and
forth in confusion—he
moaned and groaned. We finally had no choice
but to put him to sleep, to give him peace.
We were heartbroken, utterly heartbroken. We
had rescued Murphy when he was about
4-years-old and he lived with us for ten
years & 3 months. Anyway the evening before
we took Murphy to the vet to have him
euthanized I took this photo. I would like
to enter it in your contest. To me he had a
Golden Heart filled with love and a Golden
Smile about him.
