On December 30, 2001, Anne Johnson sent this tribute about her beloved Barkley.

Dear Barkley,
As I sit at the computer and write this I look at your pictures on my desk and the spot on the carpet where you used to lay and I miss you so much. The tears that Dad and I have shed for you don't come close to the amount of love you shed on us.

You were a peace maker. You made people who didn't like dogs bend over to rub your head because you wouldn't take no for an answer. You brought out the best in everyone who knew you.

I promised you that April 1st in 1991 that when the time came for us to part I would never make you suffer just so I could keep you with me. That sad morning of November 8th when I woke up and you were sick, I left the vet's thinking I would be coming back to get you in a couple days. That wasn't meant to be but it was the only way I could have ever left you. If I ever thought I wasn't going to kiss your nose or rub your head again, they wouldn't have been able to get my arms from around your neck.

We took you everywhere with us, from Maine to North Carolina. Most of our vacations were planned around watching you play on the beaches that you loved so much. Even on vacations you made more friends and people remembered you from year to year.

You were special to so many people, but to no one more special than Dad and I. You were like a little boy to me who stayed at that wonderful age of 5. We hoped we would have you for 14 or 15 years but 10 1/2 was all that we had but the memories and pictures will be with us forever.

You will always be our good boy with a smiley face. We love you and we'll cross the Rainbow Bridge together someday.

Mom and Dad
