Genuine Dog Gear's
new one size EZ Halters are a wonderful training tool for those
dogs who need extra control. A head halter is an essential and humane method for
gaining that advantage.
The basic premise is that once you can control the
nose, you can control your dog! If your dog needs much greater control than a normal collar
allows, this halter is an excellent tool for gaining your dog's attention and
getting the control you desire. The figure 8 style is completely adjustable to
fit all dogs and the leather tab tightens behind the head to prevent the dog
from slipping out of his halter. Very soft webbing reduces the chafing commonly
produced by other head halters.
We like the EZ Head Halter much better than the
Gentle Leader. It is far simpler to put on, quickly fitting any size dog without
complex adjustments. This means that you can use the same EZ Head Halter as your
dog grows and for all your dogs since you can adjust it appropriately in
seconds.
Fitting the EZ Halter and Leash is fairly easy. Simply place the
two loops over your dog's nose and then slip the loop with the slider over your
dog's ears. Slide down so that the fit is snug but not too tight. The neck loop
should lie just behind your dog's ears. Make sure your dog is able to open her
mouth wide enough to pant or pick up a ball.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Your dog will need to learn to wear a head halter
calmly as the sensation of having something on his nose is a new and strange
concept. Just follow the steps below to guarantee success!
Positive Treating +
Gradual Steps of Success = Head Collar
ACCEPTANCE
1. |
Expand the two loops (use slider if
necessary). You want the loop that is farthest
from the slider to be slightly larger than your dogs
muzzle. The loop closest to the slider should be
slightly larger than your dog's head. |
|
 |
|
2. |
Hold both loops in one hand and hold a
treat in your other hand. The fun treat game is simply to get your dog
to reach through the loops to get the yummy prize. You can be praising
him as well while he is being treated. |
3. |
Now load your pockets or wearable treat
pouch with small bite-size or small cube-size treats in preparation. As
soon as your dog
is enthusiastically shoving his nose through the loops to get the treat,
you are ready for the next step. |
4. |
Leave the smaller loop over your dog's
nose, and bring the loop with the slider over the ears. Take out a
handful of treats and keep treating while this is on so that dog gets
the connection of the positive treat with the sensation of the loop
being on. |
5. |
Adjust the slider so that the halter is
able to remain on, yet is only being fitted loosely on the face. It may
be helpful to have a friend treating your dog continuously as you are
doing this. |
6. |
Now, continuously praise and treat your dog
for a couple of minutes while the collar is on. Do not allow him to paw
it off. As soon
as your dog is calm, remove the collar and take a break. You can
actually take his food and use that as your treats as you place
the collar on again a few times over the next couple of days. |
7. |
Practice with your dog by having him wear
the halter for only 2 to 3 minutes at a time, feeding tiny treats as it
is on. Do this many times daily, especially using his dinner as treats
while this is on. It is great for him to associate dinnertime, a supreme
positive,
with the wearing of the halter. |
8. |
Practice leading your dog around the house
while you feed him treats. |
9. |
For the first walk outside, put the EZ
Halter on, but continue with your original collar and leash. That means
there will initially be no pressure on the halter. Be sure to feed lots
of treats from your treat pouch to guarantee calm behavior. |
10. |
For your second walk, begin holding onto
the EZ Halter Leash for the ending few minutes of your walk. Then,
gradually extend the amount of time you are holding onto the Halter
Leash until it is being used solely, with no need for the second leash
and collar. |
11. |
If at any time your dog tries to paw or
scratch at the nose loop, ignore it yet calmly prevent him from getting
it off. It is very important
to reward him for a few seconds as soon as he stopped his pawing or
scratching behavior.
