Napoleon (1995)
This MGM movie tells about a Golden pup who takes off on a magical journey to the wilds of the Australian Outback. Life as a pet isn't much fun for young Muffin, a pup dreaming of being a "wild dog." So when he gets his chance to escape in a helium balloon-powered basket, the pup hops on board, changes his name to Napoleon & sets off on his adventure. He meets special friends who help him as he learns more about the world and himself than he ever thought possible.

Local pair share lead role in new Aussie movie
LOCAL pooches Trooper and Kaleb are heading for the big time. They star in the $4 million film, Napoleon, shot on location in South Australia and New Zealand and now being released. Both dogs play the lead part of Napoleon, a frustrated Golden Retriever who knows he's not cut out for a comfortable city life. Instead, he sets off for the outback and a series of wild and wonderful adventures, including a memorable trip in a hot-air balloon. Trooper is owned by Eden Hill's Lillian Robinson, while Kaleb belongs to Jane Dooly, of Bassendean. They were the only two dogs from WA to feature in the movie.

Now, Air Bud must put down his bat and glove and try to solve the case of the missing pups.

Air Bud - World Pup (2000)
This DVD was released on December 12, 2000. Three is a charm for the Air Bud franchise, as Disney's third installment seems to have rekindled its initial freshness. Buddy takes to the soccer field this time, and he has the immense good fortune of being joined by real-life U.S. Women's Soccer Team champions Brandi Chastain, Brianna Scurry, and Tisha Venturini, among others. Kevin Zegers returns to the story as Buddy's owner, who falls in love with the only girl on his own soccer team. While sparks fly on and off the field in that romance, Buddy has a love interest of his own and soon becomes a father to six puppies. The drama heightens when a couple of puppy thieves (who closely resemble Jasper and Horace from 101 Dalmatians) pose as dog catchers and make off with the pups. A hilarious chase, assisted by dozens of courageous canines, ensues.

Homeward Bound - The Incredible Journey (1993)
This DVD was released on September 3, 2002. Walt Disney studios had previously adapted Sheila Burnford's classic animal-adventure novel The Incredible Journey in 1963, and the story proves just as durable in this popular 1993 version, in which the heroic trio of animals are given voices provided by Don Ameche, Michael J. Fox, and Sally Field. They don't actually speak (like the clever critters in Babe), but we hear their "voices" as the lost household pets--Shadow the golden retriever, Chance the bulldog, and Sassy the cat--survive a harrowing series of adventures as they struggle to find their way home.

Homeward Bound II - Lost in San Francisco (1996)
This DVD was released on July 1, 2003. This movie follows the unwritten law of sequels: bring back the same characters and put them in similar jeopardy with slightly tweaked circumstances. Instead of a cross-country journey, this time the pet trio must get from the San Francisco airport across the Golden Gate Bridge to their suburban home. Michael J. Fox and Sally Field return as the voices of Chance the bulldog and Sassy the cat, with Ralph Waite replacing the late Don Ameche as the elderly golden retriever. Their journey features dogfights, house fires, an epic battle with a pair of petnappers, and a love affair for Chance with a stray from the other side of the bridge (Carla Gugino).

The Retrievers (2000)
The Lowrys are starting a new life, moving to the quiet Northern California town of Placerville. But when they are "adopted" by a clever yet lovable stray Golden Retriever, their lives change in ways they never imagined. It’s not long before the Lowrys discover that "Pilot" is pregnant. But when it comes time to find new homes for the puppies, the Lowrys learn how hard it can be to say goodbye….and how a determined Golden Retriever can show them a thing or two about the bonds of family. Pilot wants her puppies back! Can the Lowrys retrieve the Retrievers from the wacky cast of characters that adopted them? The Retrievers is a heartwarming story about how a stray Golden Retriever, along with her litter of pups, teaches the Lowrys some big lessons about life, love, family, and what’s truly important.

Sherwood’s dog kills a chicken, so he blames Pete, but Wheezer and his sister Dorothy have the last laugh; then Spanky and the Gang try to impress the daughter of Mr. Jones, the new truant officer, by Sprucin’ Up. Courage of Lassie (1946)
This DVD was released on August 24, 2004. Despite the film's title, the collie that stars here is not Lassie... but the equally spirited "Bill." The adventuresome pooch begins what promises to be a hard life when he's abandoned in the forest. There, he runs into a variety of wildlife, including a bear and a skunk. Then he finds a home with a warm-hearted teenager, Kathie Merrick, who begins to train him as a sheep dog. After he's hurt, however, he gets yet another new home... and then is shipped off to fight in the Second World War! Bill returns home from battle a junkyard dog of sorts. Terrible surroundings, and a lack of care, make matters worse for the usually affable canine. Only under Kathie's loving guidance will he again be the sweet, obedient collie of yore.

Here, Sam Carraclough sells the collie to a rich family, much to the dismay of both Lassie, and Sam's young son Joe. Lassie misses the Carracloughs so much that, with "dogged" determination, she attempts a dangerous, adventure-filled cross-country trip back home. After her poor family sells her, the almost-human Collie travels 1,000 miles to return to them. This film was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1993.

When the plane is shot out of the sky over enemy-occupied Norway, Joe and Laddie parachute from the burning aircraft and begin their wartime adventures in this lively sequel. Peter Lawford and June Lockhart (long-time star of TV's Lassie) are Joe and Priscilla, parts previously played by Roddy McDowall and Elizabeth Taylor. Donald Crisp and Nigel Bruce return as savvy dog trainers. And ready to win the hearts and help win the war is a collie whose love matches his boundless courage.

Lassie (1994)
This DVD was released on May 13, 2003. This update on the Lassie legend stars Thomas Guiry as a troubled city kid whose family retreats to the country, where he befriends the famous collie and changes for the better. Conflict develops when a ruthless sheep rancher causes trouble for everyone. Director Daniel Petrie (The Bay Boy) aims only to revive the healthy spirit of previous Lassie films (and the television series) in a new milieu, and toward those modest ambitions he succeeds.

Benji (1974)
This DVD was released on February 16, 1999. No Hollywood studio was willing to buy or distribute this 1974 family film made in Texas, but it managed to find a considerable audience anyway in the U.S. and become a minor classic under its own steam. While Benji's production values aren't everything they could be, and the acting is at best uneven, the movie is really held together by the immense charm of the unassuming mutt who plays the title character. He may not look as impressive as Lassie or Rin Tin Tin, but poor stray Benji (played by a pooch named Higgins) is as brave and resourceful as they come, especially when a couple of neighborhood children are kidnapped and in need of rescuing. And what about that romantic subplot: Benji falling for a pampered pup from the good side of the tracks.
