Retriever Behaviors
Golden Retrievers are very special dogs with equally special traits and
characteristics that set them uniquely apart from other (some would say,
"lesser") dogs. This book aims to answer all of the questions golden owners
wonder about this breed, such as: Why do Goldens have such long hair that sheds
so much? Why do Goldens look like they're smiling? Why do Goldens eat grass? Why
do they love to play, and why do they make such good service dogs? These and 35
other interesting Golden behaviors are lightheartedly and thoroughly explained
in this fun and insightful volume. The text is illustrated with stunning color
photographs of the various behaviors. The author is Tom Davis, who has been
living with and writing about dogs for 30 years. He has written several Golden

Life is Good!:
Lessons in Joyful Living
This book was written by Trixie and Dean Koontz and was
published on October 31, 2004 by Yorkville Press. People often say they wish they could
have a dogs life, with nothing to do but play, eat and sleep. In this charming gift
book, popular novelist Koontz channels his Golden, Trixie, a former
Canine Companions for Independence service dog, to
get her tips on the good life. In breathless, stylized dog grammar ("Chase ball!
Chase butterfly! Chase cat!"), Koontz advocates long naps, daydreaming and
appreciating nature. The book is laid out beautifully, with adorable pictures
of Trixie playing, napping and nuzzling Koontz. In the margins of some pages, she ponders
various "eternal mysteries" such as "did Shakespeare really write his plays
himself or did his dog help?"

Goldens Forever:
A Heartwarming Celebration of the Golden Retriever
This book was written by Todd R. Berger,
Gary Shiebler and Sam Savitt and was published in May 2001 by Voyageur Press. This is the
encore presentation to the book, "Love of Goldens." A collection of heartwarming
text and inviting photos, the book pays tribute to the world's nicest dog. These diverse
stories capture both the playful and hardworking sides of Goldens: from Clue, who helps
solve a mystery, to Willie, who can detect epileptic seizures; from Cody, who hunts
pheasants, to Amy, who's just happy to see her family. Together with these touching tales,
the combination of spectacular photos and artwork captures the easy-going temperament and
golden good looks of this popular breed.
Love of Goldens
This book, which was edited by Todd Berger
with photography by Alan & Sandy Carey, was published in December 1998 by Voyageur
Press PetLife Library. It is the first book of its kind as it collects both stories and
photos of the Golden child of the dog world. The color photos, which are truly
irresistible in this book, are among the best we have ever seen. The Careys have spent
many years photographing Goldens to create a collection unrivaled in the photographic
world. It honestly captures the wonder of this breed, and is truly the finest collection
of Golden Retriever images to date.
For The Love of
Golden Retrievers

and published by Browntrout Publishers in 1998. This is a special prize of a book. On one

as Mark Raycroft, Donna Dannen, and Alan & Sandy Carey. But it also details the
history of the Golden Retriever from an author who has spent several years as a research
scientist at the American Museum of Natural History.
Yellowdog: The
Golden Retrievers of Martha's Vineyard
This book was written by Debra Marlin and
published in 1995 by Yellowdog Publishing. This book is a treasure. It begins by telling
(in writing) the story of Sonny and Lake, and how Debra's passion for these yellowdogs
began. Nineteen black & white photo plates tell the visual story of her love for her
brood. Anyone who has ever loved a canine companion will love this book. In her
breathtaking black-and-white photographs, taken over an 11-year period, dogs Sonny, Lake,
Breaker, and Tucker frolic for the camera in such settings as Chappaquiddick Island and
South Beach. Accompanying the sensitive photographs are Marlin's thoughts about the life
and loss of Sonny, her first beloved retriever, as well as the ever-adventurous escapades
of the three remaining "moochie-poochies." Charming and undeniably poignant,
Marlin's celebration of the human-dog bond through images and verse is one of the best.
Yellowpup
This book was written by Debra Marlin and
published in September 1999 by Bullfinch Publishers. This book follows in the glorious
Golden footsteps of Yellowdog. Whether frolicking on the beach, playing hide-and-seek in
the woods, snoozing on the porch, or splashing in the ocean, the adorable Golden Retriever
puppies of Yellowpup will steal your heart in this charming sequel to the well-loved book
Yellowdog.
With an obvious affection for her subject, Debra Marlin truly captures the spirit of
puppyhood in her irresistible images. Alternately wise, mischievous, innocent, and
inquisitive, these darling balls of fur are as entertaining as they are endearing. The
sunlit beaches, rocky coastline, and shady woods of Martha's Vineyard and New England
provide a stunning backdrop for these evocative photographs. Complementing the beautifully
reproduced black-and-white photographs is a lighthearted text that explores the joys and
pitfalls of a raising a puppy. Yellowpup takes the reader on a playful romp through the
lovable realm of puppydom.
Just Puppies
This book was written by Steve Smith and
published by Willow Creek Press in 1997. This book explores the world of puppies as never
before, with over 150 color photos. It shows those formative weeks and months when puppies
dramatically transform from wild little yahoos to valued family members.
Golden Fever: A
Rolicking Romp With Everyone's Buddy, the Golden Retriever
This book was written by Bruce Cochran and was published in
September 2003 by Willow Creek Press. It's been said this would be a better world if
people were more like Golden Retrievers. Friendly, cheerful, self-assured, and just plain
loveable - these are the classic characteristics of Goldens. That's the upside. What
Golden owners won't tell you, but is hilariously revealed in this charming book of
humorous cartoons, is that these lovely dogs can also display hoodwinking deceit, annoying
persistence, blind jealousy, selfishness, flatulence and indolence. Of course, it's
because of these exasperating traits, if not in spite of them, that Goldens are so darn
endearing. All Golden owners will recognize themselves and their dogs in Bruce Cochran's
Golden Fever!

The Golden
Years: A Pet Owner's Guide to the Golden Retriever
This book was written by Mordecai Siegal
& Matthew Margolis in 1996 and published by Little, Brown & Company. These canine
experts offer a profile of the Golden for both owners and prospective owners. "As you
read this sentence, your lovable Golden Retriever is probably turning his water bowl
upside down and splashing in the puddles with his large paws. He expects you to be as
excited to see him and his puddles as he is to see you the minute you walk in the door.
Your very presence makes him happy. He brings you his ball and invites you to play with
him as he smiles with his slurping tongue. But if something is seriously wrong and you
feel bad, your Golden senses it right away and is likely to console you by gently giving
you his paw or by laying his head on your lap. He gladly shares your sadness as well as
your happiness. . . . Golden Retrievers are living proof that dreams do come true. It is
impossible to keep your hands off these stand-up comedians. At times they are uninhibited
clowns, & at other times they are the essence of canine dignity. To know them is to
love them."

dog photographer and present Rufus's favorite beaches, parks, and city
scenes from a uniquely different perspective. Dog lovers in particular

Study
of the Golden Retriever
Written by Marcia Schlehr, this is known as the "Blue
Book" by those in the breed. Essentially, an illustrated Standard of the Golden
Retriever. Intent is to explain and clarify the standard and to relate its requirements to
the Golden's original intended function as a working retriever of game birds. Emphasis is
on the importance of maintaining the qualities that have made the Golden such a versatile,
useful, practical dog. Black & white line drawing. Author Marcia Schlehr is a breeder,
judge, artist, and writer.
Just Goldens
This book, with photos by Dale C. Spartas
& text by Tom Davis, was published in 1996 by Willow Creek Press. With over 200 color
photos, it's an affectionate look at the dog that brightens our days and warms our homes
with its tail-wagging, heart-warming presence. "If ever a breed was affectionate to a
fault, it's the Golden. They're people dogs, pure and simple, and if you own one there's
never any doubt that you're the center of its universe. Chances are, too, that it will
become the center of yours. Golden owners & their dogs didn't invent the mutual
admiration society-they perfected it."
101 Uses of a
Golden
This book, which features the photography of
Denver Bryan, was published by Willow Creek Press in 1999. It unlocks 101 of a Golden's
hidden talents, including backseat driving, foot warmer, taste tester, and more. Our
personal favorites are Linesman, Farm Hand, and Couch Potato.
Watchers
This book was written by Dean Koontz and
published by the Berkley Publishing Group in 1996. It is by far my favorite book from this
author. Of course, it's easy to guess why. The hero of the book is a genius Golden
Retriever, aptly named "Einstein." When Travis Cornell and Nora Devon meet
Einstein, they are touched by the dog's intelligence. Einstein is one of two altered life
forms that had escaped from a top-secret lab. The other, "The Outsider," is a
deadly hybrid. To protect themselves, Travis and Nora must learn to be deadly as well.
This book has it all -- suspense, horror, pity, love & conscience!
The Darkest Evening of the Year
A November 2007 publication from best selling writer Dean Koontz, this book has
been one that he’s been waiting years to write, at once a love story, a
thrilling adventure, and a masterwork of suspense that redefines the boundaries
of primal fear–and of enduring devotion. Amy Redwing has dedicated her life to
the southern California organization she founded to rescue abandoned and
endangered Golden Retrievers. Among dog lovers, she’s a legend for the risks
she’ll take to save an animal from abuse. Among her friends, Amy’s heedless
devotion is often cause for concern. To widower Brian McCarthy, whose commitment
she can’t allow herself to return, Amy’s behavior is far more puzzling and hides
a shattering secret. No one is surprised when Amy risks her life to save Nickie,
nor when she takes the female golden into her home. The bond between Amy and
Nickie is immediate and uncanny. Even her two other Goldens, Fred and Ethel,
recognize Nickie as special, a natural alpha. But the instant joy Nickie brings
is shadowed by a series of eerie incidents. An ominous stranger. A mysterious
home invasion. And the unmistakable sense that someone is watching Amy’s every
move and that, whoever it is, he’s not alone. Someone has come back to turn Amy
into the desperate, hunted creature she’s always been there to save. But now
there’s no one to save Amy and those she loves.
PLAY
DEAD
Written by David Rosenfelt. Few can rival attorney Andy Carpenter's
affection for golden retrievers, especially his own beloved Tara. After he
astonishes a New Jersey courtroom by successfully appealing another golden's
death sentence, Andy discovers that this gentle dog is a key witness to a murder
that took place five years before. Andy pushes the boundaries of the law even
further as he struggles to free an innocent man by convincing an incredulous
jury to take canine testimony seriously. It will take all the tricks Andy's
fertile mind can conceive to get to the bottom of a remarkable chain of
impersonations and murder, and save a dog's life-and his own-in the process.

begin to rain down on him like bricks from a cracked fortress.
