This book was written by Bardi McLennan,
with photography by Shon Cox Doucette, and published by the Howell Book House in November
1993. The author is a dog breeder and parent and does well at explaining the many issues
concerning dogs and kids. Areas covered include obedience training, helping an older dog
adjust to a new baby, handling crisis situations such as a lost dog, and deciding custody
in case of divorce. There is also good advice tucked in on dog and kid activities, such as
playing ball or showing your dog.

Animals: Social Development and Our Connections to Other Species
This book was written by Gene & Olin Eugene Myers and
published by Westview Press in January 1998. It is based on Gene Myers's study of 24
children. The book is a delightful and rewarding opportunity to learn how children design
a sense of self that separates them from the animal world. It actually captures in a
child's own words the importance of animals.
Dog Training for Children
This is a videotape by Ian
Dunbar (1996). It features Dunbar working with kids from ages 6 to 15. It includes
welcoming a new pup, housetraining, lead training, sit & down, focusing attention,
improving off-leash control, fast recalls, improving the stay, teaching with toys, and
playing training games. There is also a part on Junior Dog Agility which features:
improving control & attention, regulating speed, hitting the contact points, and
speeding up the down on the pause table. This tape features only kind, patient, positive
training methods, using Dunbar's wonderful "lure and reward" technique. It is in
VHS format and runs 84 minutes.
