By Silvia Hartmann-Kent. Emphasis is on anticipating and preventing problems between children and dogs. "Action Plans" show how to overcome existing problems. None of the methods described involved any kind of physical confrontation with the dog, but are based on the building of trust between the parent, the dog and the child or baby.

Sounds Good CD - Babies (2005)
Written by Terry Ryan. The intent of this CD is to provide a convenient tool to help desensitize your dog to noises that may bother him. There are several different tracks with slightly different versions of the featured sound, so your dog won't learn "it's just the CD." Instructions, which are on a separate track so they can be skipped, include how to work with the dog, information on choosing a good instructor or behaviorist, and warning of things that could go wrong.

Child-Proofing Your Dog: A Complete Guide to Preparing Your Dog for the Children in Your Life

This book was written by Brian Kilcommons & Sarah Wilson and published by Warner Books in April 1994. This book shows readers how to encourage children and dogs to be perfect companions. It also shows how to train an older dog to accept an infant. The authors do well at showing how to pick the best breed for a family dog.  

Totally Fun Things to Do with Your Dog (1988)
By Maxine Rock. Games and activities for kids and canines! With the super ideas and activities in this book, there's no end to the fun you'll have playing with your favorite four-legged friend. Discover new variations on playing catch and fetch, or teach your dog to play hide and seek. You can even throw a special party for your pal! Basic training tips and fascinating facts about dogs are included. Ages 10 and up.  

Clicker Puppy DVD (2005)
By Doggone Crazy! Clicker training is a fun all-positive method that works for dogs of all breeds and all ages. This video features children teaching young puppies sit, down, come, fetch, roll over, high five, and more. Endorsed by Karen Pryor.  

'Please Oh Please Can We Get a Dog? Parents' Guide to Dog Ownership (2004)
By Cheryl Peterson. Helps you give the right answer to one of the most dreaded questions children ask - even if the answer is "no." It reminds you that getting a dog is making a commitment, helps you take a realistic look at the family situation and the challenges and rewards of dog ownership so you can objectively answer question and give answers.  

A Dog's Best Friend Activity Book (1999)
By Lisa Rosenthal. Over 60 inventive activities build a long-lasting friendship between kids and their dogs. You can plan a can-do canine show, throw a pooch birthday party, bake dog biscuits or a cake, have fun in the outdoors, create canine comforts and crafts, get the lowdown on good pet care and dog obedience training. *Excellent care tips for kids, even first time adult owners! Includes children's reading list, web site listings, pet-care resources, animal organizations and events, amusing trivia for dog lovers, more.  

Dogs & Kids: Parenting Tips
This book was written by Bardi McLennan, with photography by Shon Cox Doucette, and published by the Howell Book House in November 1993. The author is a dog breeder and parent and does well at explaining the many issues concerning dogs and kids. Areas covered include obedience training, helping an older dog adjust to a new baby, handling crisis situations such as a lost dog, and deciding custody in case of divorce. There is also good advice tucked in on dog and kid activities, such as playing ball or showing your dog.  

Children & Animals: Social Development and Our Connections to Other Species
This book was written by Gene & Olin Eugene Myers and published by Westview Press in January 1998. It is based on Gene Myers's study of 24 children. The book is a delightful and rewarding opportunity to learn how children design a sense of self that separates them from the animal world. It actually captures in a child's own words the importance of animals.  

Dog Training for Children
This is a videotape by Ian Dunbar (1996). It features Dunbar working with kids from ages 6 to 15. It includes welcoming a new pup, housetraining, lead training, sit & down, focusing attention, improving off-leash control, fast recalls, improving the stay, teaching with toys, and playing training games. There is also a part on Junior Dog Agility which features: improving control & attention, regulating speed, hitting the contact points, and speeding up the down on the pause table. This tape features only kind, patient, positive training methods, using Dunbar's wonderful "lure and reward" technique. It is in VHS format and runs 84 minutes.
