Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook, Fourth Edition (2007)
By Dr. Debra M Eldredge. Open the front cover and the first
two pages you see contain the Index of Signs and Symptoms,
from Abdomen (painful, swollen, distended, and tucked up) to
Weight loss, Wheezing, and Whining (continual). There's a
comprehensive index in back, of course, running the gamut
from Abortion to Zinc-Responsive Dermatosis, which is all
very useful, but when your pooch is in pain, it's great to
be able to turn, with the minimum of folderol, to the page
that says to relax, it's nothing a bit of extra grooming
won't fix, or alternatively to hightail it over to the vet
hospital. It's a wonderful reference for any dog owner, with
chapters on emergencies (such as burns, dehydration, and
poisoning), as well as worms, infectious diseases, skin
care, and canine eyes, ears, and nose. There are chapters on
the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems, the
nervous, musculoskeletal, and urinary systems, plus dog sex,
whelping, puppy pediatrics, geriatrics, and chapters on
cancers and medications. In short, it covers every
health dimension a dog owner might want to know more about,
identifies the possible causes, helps you determine the
severity of the condition, and indicates what treatments or
actions to take to best insure your dog's good health.

Living With Cancer: A Pet Owner's Resource
This book was written by Veterinarian Dr.
Robin Downing and published by the American Animal Hospital Association in April 2000.
When Dr. Downing had to confront a cancer diagnosis in her dog, Murphy, she found there
was no one source for all the questions she faced. This resulting book is a complete guide
to treatment and care. Written with the positive but realistic view that cancer does not
always mean death, Dr. Downing asks many questions confronted by pet owners and answers
them in a comprehensive and caring manner.

Starbeams, Dogs and Cancer (December 2007)
By Franklin Abshire. This picture book explains how a gamma ray named Sammy
Starbeam accidentally causes a cancer in a dog named Rocky. It is presented in
an upbeat manner and absolutely no blame is placed on anyone for Rocky's
misfortune. Rocky survives as indicated in the upcoming sequel titled Rocky
Returns! The Dog with the Bionic Leg! The book is beautifully illustrated and
presents this rather touchy subject in a way suitable for young children. It
gives a simplified explanation of how the cancer starts that young children can
understand. It is a useful way to introduce the subject to children who may have
to deal with cancer in a pet or loved one.

Brum (Editor). It was published in December 2002 by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Books.
Arden is an animal journalist, author, lecturer, and host of her own cable show, and was

prevents illness from occurring is key to a happy and healthy pet. Topics covered include:
Dentistry, grooming, and nutrition; Emergencies, surgery, first aid, and vaccinations;
Training and behavior; and, Caring for middle-aged and advanced-aged dogs. Angell's unique
preventive care handouts and brochure pages (offered for the first time to the general

Without
Regret: A Handbook for Owners of Canine Amputees
This book was written by Susan Neal and was published in July 2002 by Doral
Publishing. Susan Neal has been involved in nearly all aspects of animal care for more
than twenty-five years, including breeding, training, showing, grooming, teaching, rescue,
veterinary care, volunteering, and business management. She currently owns the VIP Pet
Care Center in Francestown, N.H. The owner of a canine amputee, she seeks to tell the
story of her experience--and the experiences of others--with these special animals. The
author writes -- "So, what can you do with a three-legged dog? We must remember that
dogs are not humans. Though they may exist on the same planet that we do, dogs live in a
vastly different world. They are not affected by the emotional baggage that we carry. A
dog's quality of life, his ability to function as Nature intended, and his desire to
perform the work and activities that he loves and for which he may be born and bred, will
be almost completely unaffected by his amputation."
This book is a useful and informative guide for anyone who owns, interacts, lives with,
loves, or is curious about canine amputees. It is also a moving tribute to these canine
survivors and those who love them. This unique and practical book contains many
photographs that demonstrate the strength and heart of both canine amputees and their
owners.
