Gotta Dance Raffle: Showcasing Many Incredible Talents
Carolyn Scott & RookieOur Gotta Dance Raffle, to raise funds for this special film, featured a huge 78 prizes, values on items from $20 to $1000, with a total value of $6,600! Carolyn, one of our Board Members, donated her priceless talents via 10 one-hour private lessons (click here to see Carolyn working with our Alfie). And, she donated an instructional two-day freestyle seminar, that garners praise such as this: "My head is still whirling (and the rest of me too)! I learned more at this seminar than any other!"

There were artists who donated personalized and original one-of-a-kind pieces, something to attract every breed imaginable. Karen Killian, of The Watermark Studio, who provided items reproduced from her original watercolors and oils, had this to say about our mission: "I applaud your work and The Land of PureGold Foundation. I, too, have lost a Golden to cancer. I think it is a testament to their bond with us that they have absorbed even the energy of our illnesses. Would that they could have halted the evolution of domestication somewhere shy of that much empathy!"

Please be sure to check out our many donators, who have wonderful websites of their own that showcase their gorgeous wares.

We made our 400-Participant Goal - Raffle Drawing held April 3, 2006!
This was the Foundation's final fundraiser, the monies used to help with costs for song rights and polio footage ($500 per minute). Tickets were purchased from July 4, 2005 through April 2, 2006. There were over 75 winners for our raffle. And, these winners spanned the globe. Because we were willing to put in an incredible amount of extra time and effort, many folks were able to get their most desired items. We did not utilize pre-determined prize assignments, i.e., the first ticket drawn getting prize #1, the second ticket drawn prize #2, and so on. Rather, we designed a form that allowed us to query each winner about their personal prize preferences. And, while those persons with our earliest drawn tickets certainly had the best chance of getting their most desired items, we had folks whose tickets were selected near the end of the lot who still managed to get their first choices! Overall, 50% of our winners got either their top two rated items (22 got 1st choice; 18 got 2nd choice). And, almost 80% of our winners got a prize identified as one of their top 10 desired items.

To celebrate the giving spirit, folks who purchased at least two tickets could enter our Sweet Golden Smiles Photo Contest, the wClick here to see a larger version of this lovely union!inners to be determined by the following gifted artists and writer: Mia Lane, Karen Killian, Suzi Beber, and Patricia Kennedy.

Special Thanks
A special thanks goes to Dr. Nora Wilcox who donated this exquisite $400 Lladró figurine (click here to see a larger version). This generosity came when Nora was preparing for Pensacola's second hurricane, her first bringing $40,000 damage and her rescue of Golden Molly. Molly had been used as a breeder dog and was heartworm positive, also suffering due to fleas, hot spots, and ear infections. But, now she is healthy and recently got her Canine Good Citizen title. Retired after 20 years as a Navy Flight Surgeon, Nora is doing volunteer work at the Pensacola Naval Hospital with Afghanistan & Iraq returnees. As she speaks about the heartbreak in seeing how such young lives changed forever, I am thankful Molly is by her side to administer her unique brand of medical treatment.

If this is not the case, introductory information can be added, and the level scaled down.

Equipment needed for seminars includes: a wireless clip-on microphone & sound system; TV & VCR; CD player; 10 orange cones; and, touch sticks of different sizes for small to large dogs (can be dowel rods). Lladró "A Warm Welcome" Porcelain Figurine — Donated by Nora Wilcox

WINNER: John of Prior Lake, MN
"Hi Nora, the Lladro just arrived safely and it is sooooo beautiful! Thank you so much. I am so proud of you for doing volunteer work. I do volunteer to work with deaf and disabled kids at University of Minnesota and help rescue animals. I used to be a board member but still volunteer for Hearing and Service Dogs of Minnesota. I also did volunteer work over the weekend for habitat for humanity. It is a great feeling to help out animals and people who need us. G-d bless you for helping out some great causes."

I have this figure and none other can compare in so embodying the Human-Canine Bond. This (new in box) glazed porcelain figurine from Lladró's Me and My Pets collection has the full Lladró logo and accompanying paperwork. It is the type of collectible that actually increases in value the longer you have it in your possession. From the year 2002, this large 10½" x 7¼" figure shows a girl embracing a dog, which is standing on his/her hind legs and is almost as tall. To achieve its special glazed finish, the piece is taken to a spray booth and set on a turntable and the pale blue glaze is sprayed on evenly, hiding all color. Once fired, the glaze crystallizes and the colors reappear with the shiny finish so recognized in this company's creations. The Lladró inspiration comes from everything that dignifies life. They want their works "to be elegant, expressive, to ooze life and have feelings." Lladró was founded in 1953 when Juan, Jose, and Vicente, three brothers born of local farmers and endowed with great artistic talent, formed a small family company in the Valencian village of Almácera, Spain. Since then, Lladró has undergone an amazing metamorphosis from an artisan workshop to a huge firm of international scope enjoying continual growth. Retail Value (including shipping): $425.

Golden Retriever Puzzle — Donated by Jenny and Peter Chapman, Chapman Puzzles

WINNER: Tricia of Tulsa, OK
"The puzzle is the perfect prize. I can’t wait to get it. I am reserving a special place to display it in the living room. ... Rochelle, the wooden Golden Retriever puzzle that I won is absolutely marvelous. I love the craftsmanship and the detail of it. I have it displayed on my mantle."

I have this puzzle in my own collection, and it is truly magnificent (click here to see a larger version). It's a small world after all, for when I contacted Jenny about providing a donation, this was her reply: "We would be honored to participate. I recently lost my dear friend of 11 years, a Golden named Mohawk. His death was very sudden and unexpected. Somehow, I came upon your Land of PureGold site. It has been a great help during a time of profound grief. Mohawk was the first Golden I ever knew or lived with. He was a Buddha in a dog suit!"

This Golden, inspired by Mohawk, has caught a Frisbee which can found when the 12-piece puzzle is disassembled. The puzzle, which is 12" x 7", is cut from one piece of solid cherry wood. Click here to see a live demo of how these puzzles work. Retail Value (including shipping): $120.

Zeppa Hand Painted Golden Retriever Oval Platter — Donated by M. K. Zeppa

WINNER: Cindy of Suwanee, GA
"Rochelle, the box arrived today. I was so excited and surprised to see that I got my second choice! It is beautiful, too pretty to eat on, so it will have a place of honor on the kitchen wall with appreciation for all you have done in the fight against canine cancer. Thanks again."

M. K. (short for Melissa Kaye) Zeppa, of Zeppa Studios, has graciously donated a two-Golden embellished earthenware oval platter that is ready for service or display. These platters are generously sized at 11 by 17 inches with an inch or so indentation. They are also microwave and food safe. But, for best results, please hand wash these wonderful expressions of art. M. K. is the Head Artist for Zeppa Studios, in 1986 receiving her M.F.A. in Painting from Pratt Institute. Her studios are a leading producer of unique giftware and accessories. I personally have two Zeppa display plates, napkin set, and cutting board, and they are all equally exquisite. WINNER: Shannon of Detroit, MI
"I received my note cards today - they're great!!! Glad the raffle was a success."

This is Choptank, who Karen describes this way: Choptank was too big as conformation goes, but he thought he was a lapdog. We used to tease Chessie saying, “If you didn’t have enough brains for ten puppies, you shouldn’t have had ten puppies.” I learned after she died that if she only had nine brains to go around, she had eleven hearts and Choppy got the extra one. He became my rock. He was happy, gentle, easy, and like no other dog I’ve known, he was a hugger. In October '98 we lost Choppy to a big old tumor on his big old heart. He  left an enormous hole in our lives. This adorable depiction from Karen's original Watercolor Collection has been reproduced in this boxed greeting card set. There are 12 cards and envelopes. The cards are oversized at 5 inches x 7 inches. Retail Value (including shipping): $32.

Golden Pup and Rose Original Acrylic Painting — Donated by Michael Johnson

WINNER: Jim of Holiday, FL
"Hi Rochelle, my prize came today and it's great. It was one of the things I really wanted. Thank you again!"

This adorable original painting comes from artist, Michael Johnson. It is an 8 inch x 10 inch acrylic on paper that has been affixed to form board. Michael is a painter, illustrator, and also self-advocate. He paints animals from a cheerful and innocent point of view, finding inspiration from his very own community. Actually celebrations of life, Michael's paintings are filled with energy, movement and color. Art literally opened up Michael's world, and although born with Down syndrome, he displays an amazing sense of wonder and determination to communicate with others. For sixteen years he attended Park School, a public school that serves children with special needs and that incorporates The Arts into their curriculum. When Michael graduated in 1993 at age 21, he decided that he would be an artist. Painting almost every day since graduation, he views art as his job—not his hobby. Having completed more than 500 paintings and illustrations, Michael has become a hero for children who have Down syndrome as well as an inspiration for their families. Retail Value (including shipping): $132.

WINNER: Cleese of Laruel, NY
I came to discover Youlia's work on Ebay, having won a gorgeous Golden Retriever sculptured cookie jar. Youlia is gifted in creating multiple breed sculptures and anyone who loves their dog must have at least one of her creations adorning their home. I have tried to show some of examples of her work here, so that you can see her detailing of breeds such as Terriers, Corgis, Shelties, and Papillons.

Check out the various breeds Youlia has detailed to get an idea of what she could create for you should you be lucky enough to get this prize. She has many wonderful pieces on display at her Furrytale Ceramic Studio website that will help you to see if your breed choice is included. Currently, Youlia does not do any wrinkled dogs like Bulldogs, or Mastiff and such. Sculpture examples can be seen at her Cookie Jar, Dog Sculpture, and Tea Pot pages.

Youlia has graciously donated the creation of one of her cookie jars, which is 10 inches tall and 7 inches across. While my cookie jar has a sculptured embellished Golden on the lid, its base has been left unpainted. However, you can also opt to have something painted on the jar itself, as shown in those examples here, including personalization of your dog's name or even a clever line of text, such as "Cookie Time" or "For Noshers Only", etc. The winner of this prize will be able to work with Youlia in determining the specific design to be created. Best Friend Services $150 Gift Certificate — Donated by Best Friend Services President, Christopher "CJ" Johnson
WINNER: Fred of Clearwater, FL
After losing a much loved Cocker Spaniel, CJ, a pilot by profession, formed this unique company. The loss was the first time his family had to deal with how to say good-bye. Countless hours were spent researching all the options as there was so much to learn about urns and more. He decided that folks in the same situation did not need to be doing all of this during their time of grief, thus making the process much easier and comforting. They truly have the resources to help you through your loss, as they provide a variety of ideas for memorializing your beloved companion. CJ verbally guaranteed me that his company always offered the highest quality urns at the lowest possible price, with 100% satisfaction. In fact, he offers a 100% money back guarantee, no questions asked, if you are not happy. Honestly, I do not imagine many businesses can manage that.

While Best Friend Services specializes in their selection of Hardwood, Stone, Porcelain & Ceramic, and Metal Urns, they also provide Granite Burial Markers, Pendants, and a large array of Sympathy Gifts. Their Standard Traditional Urn is made from solid hardwood, their most popular version customized with a full-color photo of your dog. Laser engraving is also provided on another version. Figurine Urns include a custom figurine of your dog (I've shown one of the Corgi options), from a collection of over 400 breed figurines.  After purchasing an urn or other memorial, you are given the opportunity to create an e-card to inform your friends and family of your loss. It should be noted that this gift certificate never expires. Retail Value (includes FREE ground shipping): $150.

Author Personalized Book: Getting Lucky: How One Special Dog Found Love and a Second Chance at Angel's Gate — Donated by Susan Marino

WINNER: Michael of Elfers, FL
"A hospice for doggies. What a wonderful concept. I look forward to reading it. Thank you very much."

Getting Lucky details the stories of over 20 animals. One story details the life of Lucky, a dog who is sent to Angel's Gate to die but instead finds a whole new way of living. Then there is Brutus, who due to a lesion, was barely able to move, but now after months of hydro and physical therapy enjoys daily walks. But, the book is also the story of a woman with a mission. Susan Marino, a former intensive-care pediatric nurse, started Angel's Gate Residential Hospice & Rehabilitation Center for Animals 12 years ago in the belief that even critically ill and abandoned animals deserved to die with dignity and respect. This important book is a testament to the difference one person can make. Thanks to Susan, over 150 animals have been given the kind of hospice care usually reserved for people. Some recover from their life-threatening injuries or illnesses, while others are given refuge through their final days. Published in May 2005, the book was co-authored by Denise Flaim, the author of The Holistic Dog Book and a staff writer and pet columnist for Newsday. Total Retail Value (including shipping): $30.

Puppy PattyWINNER: Lee Ann of Columbia, MD
"I received my ceramic picture frame yesterday and it is lovely! Thank you so much. I may have been in the 20% group who did not get one of their top ten picks, but I prefer to look at it as I was in the group, 100% of whom tried to make a difference. I also wished my finances would have allowed me to have gotten one of the one hour lessons with Carolyn (sigh), maybe next time! ... p.s.: I have a very big favor to ask. I absolutely adored the bookmark you sent. Is there any way I could get another one? Although Patty liked your packing material, it seems she liked the bookmark better."

We felt badly about our Golden friend, Lee Ann, not getting a top Golden pick, even though she does have a Bassett named Lucy who rounds out her canine family. So, some extra goodies were sent for both Mom and daughter.
