Gold Connections
As an avid dog lover,
I was devastated when my first Golden Retriever Lady died. Having owned her since before I
could remember, it was a very emotional experience to lose her. My heart was shattered and
I wasn't sure if I could pick up the pieces and move on. Somehow, in the process of my
grieving my father mentioned getting a new puppy. I agreed, as long as it was nothing but
another Golden Retriever, and about seven months later I found myself with a new bundle of
Golden fluff. I was merely twelve years old at the time,
and started to live my life again. The puppy who I fondly named Cookie soon became the
love of my life, my true pride and joy. I would take her places to show her off as people
young and old alike would fuss and play with her, and as time went on I began to love her
more and more.
Cookie became my child as I went through middle school, I would talk to
her, sharing all my secrets, and spending the silliest of moments playing by her side.
Cookie became part of me, living in my heart, my mind and my soul. She brought my family
closer, helping me through hard times and giving me a happiness I had never felt, or ever
experienced. When I am with Cookie I look at her and I feel not only the love that I give
her so freely but the overflowing love that she so generously gives back. Cookie and I
have a connection, a bond that is made of gold. I have taught her, but what she has taught
me is unspeakable. She has taught me true happiness, how to love, and how to live. What
she has taught me I cannot learn from anyone or anything. Cookie has lightened my life and
strengthened my soul. Though Cookie may not be a professionally trained service or rescue dog, she is
therapy and comfort to anyone and everyone she meets. I have witnessed the joy and
happiness of small children who have played with her, and the light and playful attitude
dog lovers of all ages show toward her. I once heard someone say laughter is the best
medicine. Laughter is a medicine Cookie so unselfishly gives to everyone, regardless of
whom they may be. She has given so many smiles, and made many faces glow, gladly accepting
her reward of their laugh and smile of pure delight. Her love and zest for life rubs off
on everyone who encounters her. Cookie is the person I truly want to be.
